You’re looking at the first photos of a new Mazda concept – the MX-5 Superlight. The Miata sorry, MX-5 is the preferred nomenclature, was already a svelte platform, but Mazda has apparently decided to emphasize the sporty aspects of the car by stripping out all (and we mean all) of the creature comforts, including such luxury items as a windshield! We don’t have many details but we’ll be happy to wildly speculate after the jump.

It’s likely (and faintly apparent from these shots) that the inside of the car will be completely stripped – likely no HVAC, no radio, no carpet, no sound-deadening, and certainly no cupholders. That being said, it’s safe to say the 2.0L inline four will remain snugged under the hood, with the reduced weight of the car leading both to better performance (a la Lotus, through weight reduction) with the additional benefits of lower fuel consumption, and probably lower emissions. It’s coming to the Frankfurt Auto Show, so look for more details around that time.
