NOTICES: The University Scholars Program
The Board of Governors established the University Scholars Program in 2007 to recognize the excellence of faculty members in the areas of research, scholarship and creative performance.
In continuation of this program, the Office of the Vice-President (Academic) invites applications for University Scholar appointments from Faculty members in the Fine Arts, Social Sciences, and Education.
One University Scholar appointment will be made in each identified disciplinary area.
Deadline and Application Procedure
Candidates for the University Scholar appointments may apply or can be nominated by another member of the academic community.
Application packages should be forwarded to the Office of the Vice-President (Academic) no later than June 12, 2009.
The required contents of the application package include:
(a) A current curriculum vitae of the candidate.
(b) Other current evidence of excellence in research, scholarship or performance.
(c) A letter from the nominee’s Department Chair (or immediate supervisor) in which the research, scholarship or creative performance record of the nominee is discussed.
(d) A brief assessment (1500 word maximum) of the candidate’s record in research, scholarship or performance and reasons why the nominator believes the designation is deserved.
(e) A brief proposal (1500 word maximum) prepared by the nominee for a program of activity for the two-year tenure of the designation, explaining the expected impact of the appointment.
(f) A minimum of two letters of support from scholars who are familiar with the nominee’s record and activity in research, scholarship or creative performance.
Selection Procedure and Competition Results
Appointments will be made on the basis of a combination of demonstrated excellence in research, scholarship or performance, reflected in the candidate’s academic record, and of the proposed work that would be facilitated by the award.
University Scholars must hold the hold the rank of Associate Professor or Full Professor.
The Board will appoint University Scholars on the basis of recommendations made by the President following evaluation by Faculty level Selection Committees.
The Selection Committees will be chaired by the Vice-President (Academic) and comprised of the Dean of the appropriate Faculty/School, three (3) senior faculty members, one (1) undergraduate student (appointed by the University of Lethbridge Students’ Union), and one (1) graduate student (appointed by the Graduate Students Association).
Complete application packages for the University Scholars Program, submitted to the Office of the Vice-President (Academic) no later than June 12th, will be submitted for review and evaluation by at least three (3) external reviewers.
The Selection Committees, considering the proposals and the reviews, will recommend to the President a candidate for each appointment.
The Board of Governors will announce the recipients of the awards during the Spring 2010 semester.
The two-year appointments will commence on July 1, 2010.
Details of the University Scholars Appointments
The Board provides University Scholars with a research grant totalling $5,000 over the two years of the designation, in addition to $1,500 over two years that may be used towards conference travel, conference registration, speaking and/or performance engagement expenses, or other activities used to disseminate their research activity.
One course relief in teaching duty will be granted in each year of an appointment.
Each University Scholar must give a public lecture or performance as part of the University Scholars Series at the University of Lethbridge during the two-year term of their designation as a University Scholar.
